The Client and Its Challenge
The board of directors of a small liberal-arts college wanted to ensure that the administration was effectively managing the college's risks and adequately protecting its 2,400 students. The board's specific concerns included the efficiency of risk transfer policies and the college's loss prevention procedures and protocols. The board engaged Marsh's Risk Focus practice to conduct a campus-wide assessment of risk exposures.
The Risk Consulting Solution
Marsh conducted a series of Risk Focus interviews with administration leaders to develop a "risk inventory," followed by a full day of on-site reviews to determine the adequacy of existing safety procedures and property risk controls. Subsequently, Marsh combined the findings from both steps and presented them in a Risk Focus workshop.
During the joint client/Marsh workshop, discussions among the board, the administration, and Marsh consultants focused on the college's critical risk exposures and overall risk management effectiveness.
Results
Marsh created an action plan, prioritizing measures that would improve the college's property and safety risk management, as well as its overall risk management system. With its risks identified and prioritized, the college can better decide where to allocate scarce risk management resources. Today, the college has begun to implement the prioritized list of recommendations.
