The Client and Its Challenge
An organization with over 1,200 power units was experiencing a high accident frequency rate and a driver turnover rate in excess of 180 percent. The client realized that it had to decrease both its accident and turnover rates, if it were to meet its financial objectives. The company, also interested in moving towards industry best practices, turned to Marsh for help with developing and implementing a focused safety action plan.
The Risk Consulting Solution
Marsh began with a thorough assessment that identified opportunities and areas for improvement by utilizing a GAP analysis, which is a diagnostic evaluation of a fleet’s safety management controls that has 20 components and is conducted with representatives from the following departments:
- Operations
- Safety
- Maintenance
- Regulatory compliance
- Executive management
- Dispatch
- Drivers
- Other internal groups such as receptionists, back office employees, etc.
The goal of the GAP analysis was to evaluate where an organization falls relative to industry best practices. After conducting extensive interviews with key stakeholders, Marsh consultants scored each of the 20 components on a scale of zero to five – where five represents industry best practices. The resulting information was shared with the client along with recommendations on how the organization could move toward a score of five in each of the components.
Results
As a result of the GAP analysis, a formal safety action plan was developed and implemented. By addressing numerous safety management controls over the following 18 months, the client reduced its driver turnover to 90 percent and experienced an 18 percent reduction in collision frequency.
