The Client and Its Challenge
A comprehensive healthcare provider with 16 acute care and 13 long-term care facilities wanted to merge all of its safety management programs into one consistent, coordinated program.
The Risk Consulting Solution
Marsh was retained to design a corporate training course that included information on safety, regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, workers’ compensation, and general industry best practices. Class participants included individuals with a variety of responsibilities including safety, risk management, employee health, emergency management, and current regulations. During the three and a half-day training, participants learned to develop and implement a cost-effective safety program based on industry best practices. The course focused on ways to reduce workers’ compensation costs and promote uniform program management across the client’s multiple facilities.
To prepare for the training, Marsh consultants created a 16-chapter manual, covering issues such as ergonomics, safety and risk management, and regulatory compliance, designed to prepare participants to pass the Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) exam. The course was taught by a variety of experts and concluded with an exam proctored by Marsh. Upon completion, participants received a CHSP certificate.
Results
To date, more than 100 individuals have completed the training course and the client has been recognized for having more certified individuals than any healthcare system worldwide. Additionally, the client asked Marsh to develop an industrial hygiene workshop, and consultants continue to support the client through additional training sessions and presentations.
The client has capitalized on this success and expanded the collaboration model beyond safety to facility emergency management. Better communication between operations and facilities has also resulted in cost savings leveraged from bulk purchasing and reductions in program and task duplication.
