A nationwide building materials distributor wanted to reduce the number of collisions in its fleet of tractor-trailers, straight trucks, heavy-duty pick-up trucks, and vans.

The Risk Consulting Solution
The distributor hired Marsh to design a driver-safety training seminar that could be taught by the company's lead drivers. Marsh trained the company's lead drivers in how to teach Marsh's "P.A.C.E. Yourself" (Plan ahead, Analyze the surroundings, Communicate with others, Execute safety) driving program. Lead drivers then trained all of the distributor's customer service representatives who were responsible for operating vehicles.

The P.A.C.E. Yourself program provided a forum for participants to identify, analyze, and discuss dangerous driving behaviors. Trainers also led participants in a discussion about the elements that make up traffic and to what extent those elements lead to collisions, near-miss situations, and the true costs associated with collisions. Consultants then used a P.A.C.E. driving module to teach drivers how to avoid collisions.

Results
In the first full year after the distributor implemented the P.A.C.E. Yourself program, the company successfully reduced its total number of collisions by 40 percent. Additionally, the company reduced the number of rear-end collisions to zero.
